George Schultz earned a bachelor’s degree in math from Florida State University in 1963 and was inducted into Phi Beta Kappa and Phi Kappa Phi academic honor societies along with Pi Mu Epsilon, a math honorary society.
He then earned a master’s in math at FSU and joined the faculty at the Clearwater Campus in 1965. While teaching, Dr. Schultz earned a Ph.D. in mathematics from the University of South Florida 1975. During his teaching career at SPJC from 1965 to 1997, Dr. Schultz was heavily involved with the teaching and improvement of the calculus and post-calculus math courses. He was instrumental creating computer- assisted instruction for calculus in BASIC in the 1970s and wrote A BASIC Language Manual for calculus. Dr. Schultz was a Vice President of the Florida Section of the Mathematical Society of America (MAA). MAA as well as a speaker at several state and regional MAA meetings. Calculus reform was a controversial issue in the mid-1980s. He coordinated a two-day conference to address this issue with prominent speakers from across the country. In 1989, the student body elected him as an outstanding teacher on the Clearwater Campus. He has authored several professional papers for math and statistics journals and co-authored a textbook “Focus on College Algebra”. He is fluent in Spanish and Greek. He continues to teach as an adjunct, training future secondary math teachers. A life-long student of judo, he was inducted into the United States Martial Arts Association Hall of Fame in 2000.
Congratulations to a grade-A instructor! I always appreciated your teaching method, your outside help, and your great sense of humor. I’m so glad that you are receiving this honorable recognition for all of your work with SPJC/SPC.
You have been an asset to the College of Education. Congratulations!
Congratulations Dr. Schultz! Thank you for all you have done for math students and for SPC.
Congratulations, George! This is a very well deserved honor! Your many contributions to the college and your outstanding work with the students are appropriately recognized! You worked for many years as a leader and team member with the faculty and your leadership is still very much appreciated. I am happy you are continuing to work with the COE students and providing them with a strong background in mathematics for their future teaching and a model for excellence in teaching.
Congratulations! I have never known anyone as excited about math as you were which made your Trig class very enjoyable. I got a C in in session 2 1969/70. I wish I had been a better student.
CONGRATULATIONS Dr. Schultz! You deserve this recognition and more! You are one of the finest professors I ever had. I deeply appreciate your help, your enthusiasm (all your jokes in the classroom), and desire to teach Mathematics. I will always be grateful to have you as my professor. I learned a lot from you. Dios lo bendiga siempre!
Dr Schultz was the most talented Math professor I ever met at any level. My time being one of his students will always be remembered as a pleasant experience.
It has been 30+ years since I was in your calculus class but I still remember what a great instructor you were! Congratulations. You deserve this!
I want to congratulate Dr. Schultz and also commend the university for bestowing this great honor on a well-deserving individual. I can give personal testimony to his passion for education; his focus on academics, and the high degree of integrity with which he always faced challenges. We always enjoyed “mind stretching” games as children and have had decades of “educational talk” ……George is my cousin and I am also a life-long educator. He has made us all very proud! Janice Schultz Dalbo, New York
Guten Morgen Herr Schultz…..They forgot to add that you also speak and understand a lot of German and your unusual sense of humor! CONGRATS……….
Muchas felicidades Jorge! Although we have not been in touch for many years, I still remember your tutoring during my high school years of algebra & geometry. Your dedication and patience made me understand my least favorite of subjects. Our entire family remembers you fondly and are very proud of the great honor that has been bestowed, very well deserved!
Congratulations to our former NEHI classmate … we always knew this was your destiny … congratulations on following your dreams and achievements and receiving the rewards! Phoebe Cupples Billing
It has been 21 years since I began at SPJC and then transferred to University of Florida to earn my engineering degree. You taught Calculus and Differential Equations in a way that made it understandable and logical. You always taught with passion and personality, and it really made a difference. After transferring to UF, I realized how fortunate I was to have instructors like you at SPJC who actually took the time to teach and ensure that the students were truly comprehending the material. Thank you for a great learning experience.
Congratulations, George. Remember when you taught a group of faculty Discrete Mathematics? That was an interesting and fun adventure.
Congratulations!!! As a former COE graduate I can truly say that your contributions are why the program is such a success. Now as a graduate student and fellow educator I can only hope I have the success with my students that you have had with all of yours. The honor is well deserved.
Dr Shultz taught The Calculus like no other, it was my honor to have been one of his students. There was one time that he said I was “dumber than a potato sandwich”. He most certainly was a professor I will never forget…I still laugh and tell stories about this great man. Gregory Grant SPJC class of ’89
Dr Schultz,
It was a true honor to have been your student from Algebra thru the Calculus. Even being called “dumber than a potato sandwich” I knew you were bringing out the best in me.
THANKS Doc,

Dear George, My full congratulations on your many accomplishments at all levels throughout your life, both for those for which you have been recognized ….., and for the many contributions for which you have not received the recognition/s you well deserve. Thank you for your contribution to advancing the knowledge of Mathematics ( Calculus ), foreign languages, human interactions and more during the years I attended St. Petersburg College from 1966-1968. You were by far …., the best Professor I ever had in my lifetime. And, please know that you are a world class Professor, and human-being, Moreover, having taken care of your parents throughout their entire lifetime elevates you ‘the best son’ category under any definition.

P.S. Quisiera invitarte ha almorzar comida cubana,o latina, griega, o alemana, o lo que tu prefieras.
Hi Dr. Schultz, back in about 1982-83, you were my Calculus 3, Ordinary Differential Equations, and Linear Algebra professor at St. Petersburg Junior College. I am grateful and blessed to have been in your classes. To this day, I sometimes quote you to my children: “Math is not a frozen pizza. Math is not a TV dinner. The only way you learn it is to do the problems.” Thank you for being such a phenomenal and inspirational professor.
